Opportunities within Estates and Facilities

We offer a wide range of roles in the following areas:

  • Administrative staff - Cover all aspects of administration and clerical work for Estates and Facilities.
  • Catering - From back-of-house and retail functions to patient-facing ward hostess services, responsible for providing quality food to patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Cleaning - Providing high-end clinical and non-clinical cleaning and decontamination services.
  • Customer service - Responsible for switchboard and general office functions of an NHS Trust.
  • Domestics - To clean all areas/wards/departments effectively in accordance with the area risk rating and frequencies specified.
  • Drivers - Responsible for the transport of mail, reports, specimens, drugs, patient notes, blood between doctors’ surgeries, clinics and other hospitals we manage.
  • Estate’s mechanical and electrical craftsmen - Maintaining the hospital's infrastructure, including electrical services, ventilation, medical gases’ and water.
  • Estates building - Maintaining the building fabric including decorating and carpentry.
  • Portering - Provides an effective service that supports all aspects of clinical and non-clinical services. You have considerable contact with staff, visitors, members of the public, and contractors.
  • Security - Manages the safety of all service users across our sites and adequate car parking facilities for patients, visitors, and staff.

SSD Technician, Sterile Services

I have been a part of the Sterile Services Department for the past 2 years and my journey so far has been really great. Coming from a different work background I was a bit sceptical initially as how I would cope up with things, but my colleagues and department ensured that I got all the training and support at work that I needed. 

Our team is a diverse team, and we make sure we stand by each other through thick and thin. I would highly recommend anyone to join and be a part of our Sterile Services Department.

SSD Production Manager, Sterile Services

I started my journey at Broomfield Hospital in 2007 and worked in various departments before joining Sterile Services in 2017. I started as a band 2 technician with no previous experience or any knowledge about sterilisation of surgical instruments. I had to learn a lot,. but the department provided a very good training and a lot of support 

As a team we are responsible for cleaning, sterilisation, and distribution of medical devices, instruments, and equipment used in surgeries.  

I find my job very rewarding, and despite not having a direct contact with patients it’s nice to know we are an essential part of the healthcare system, ensuring patients receive safe and effective care. 

I worked my way up within the department and recently have been promoted to a band 5 position.

Apprentice

I joined the NHS as a Business Admin Apprentice which provided me with the opportunity to learn on the job whilst also gaining a greater understanding of the NHS as an organisation. During my Apprenticeship, I felt I had gained enough knowledge and experience to apply for the role as an Internal Auditor and was thrilled to then be offered the post which has been extremely beneficial to my apprenticeship journey. 

As a result of the great encouragement and consistent support I received from my team, BDU, I was able to successfully complete my apprenticeship.  There are always new opportunities to learn and grow, and I’m excited to see what future personal and professional developments will be available to help expand my career in the NHS.

Administrator, Customer Services

I joined the NHS during covid. I am semi-retired so wanted to find a role to enjoy my working time and found it at Basildon Hospital. However, I still love love bringing new ideas to the department where I work.

I really enjoy helping people. Patients/ Outpatients are so grateful when they receive a good service. The CTC section has so many elderly patients who are sometimes confused, struggling to walk, struggling to breathe and in pain. It is so rewarding to lighten up their day. My son went into cardio-arrest recently and the treatment he was given, and continuing with, is so amazing.

I am proud to be a part of a team. When families are upset I share my experience with them and advise that they couldn’t be in better hands.

Nancy

Deputy Manager

I joined MSE 5 years ago as a domestic supervisor and was promoted to Deputy Manager 1 and half years ago.

Although I am a domestic deputy manager, our department still have PSA (ward catering) provision attached to our service. Therefore, I have over 300 employees and I also manage Teletracking and the monitoring team. Our department is the foundation in supporting with the patient’s movement and it’s the fundamental requirement for patients’ well-being as our team provide the meals and drinks to the patients and this will assist with their recovery journey.

I really enjoy my role, I feel valued from the stakeholders and I do project the positivity to my team.

We are a strong team who have great communication. We receive great support from the management and for me it’s been a great help in my journey.

I do not feel like I’m coming into work as I view my whole team a one huge family and we are all here to support one and other so please come join us!

Car Park and Security Officer

I joined MSE in December 2022 as a Car Park & Security Officer. I felt the skills I had gained in my previous roles as a first responder and prison officer would fit the into this job role.

I love that this job is vary varied and it is also very rewarding.

I could not choose a greatest achievement as I always like it when I feel I have made a difference.

The skills I have developed since I started have been learning to adapt to dealing with mental health patients.

I love my job and want to progress in my career and feel I can working for the NHS.

Sarah

I joined MSE in august 2007, when I found myself between jobs, I applied for a job in the hospital restaurant. Over time I wanted to help people on the road to recovery within my chosen career.

I previously worked in the staff canteen at Asda but I love my current job and the ward I work on. I love seeing people getting better and seeing their appetite return, going from eating two mouthfuls of food to asking for seconds.

I love that I have job security and the ability to move job roles if I want a new challenge and I always receive fantastic support.

The proudest moment I have would be when a patient has refused food and I have managed to convince them to eat a whole meal.

This job has given me more confidence in work and outside too.

I would say to anyone thinking of working for the NHS ‘Do it, you will not regret it’.
